Up early to pack. Took one more walk along the beach before our host drove us to the port. Once in Rafina, our next host, Christiana, picked us up and took us to her wonderful home on a cliff overlooking the sea. She had stocked our little guest house with organic herbs, fruits, vegetables, eggs, cheese, milk and bread. She gave us a nice tour of the Rafina area, and the farmland surrounding the city. We collected more produce, fresh from the field, and purchased meat at a Greek grocery. Amazing.
Did a bit of hiking near our beach rental. Found a new beach where we were riding the swells from a passing ferry. Tried a new cafe for dinner. Our stuffed tomato was incredibly flavorful, and we had the local beer, a very good pilsner.
Awoke to a breezy day, with clouds over the mountains on the center of the island. More steep, curvy roads, goats and beautiful sights.
Picked up a rental car and headed out to explore the island. Found some beautiful beaches at the end of narrow, steep, winding gravel roads. Fun stuff with a manual transmission! New Englanders have nothing on all the stone walls and terraced fields found here.
Early morning taxi ride to the airport, where the taxi driver gave us a special “Crete” custard pie. Short flight back to Athens, then a short bus ride to Rafina to catch a ferry to Tinos. Mass chaos loading the ferry and choppy water made for an interesting ride. Once on Tinos, we took a taxi to the beach rental. We are in a cute little studio apartment with a short walk to a shallow, sandy beach. The water is quite chilly compared to Crete, but we braved the cold for a refreshing swim.
Another tough day at the beach…..
